I’m so sick and tired of seeing articles about White Cis Heterosexual Males that completely vilifies them. I’m not a White Cis heterosexual Male - I’m a mixed queer female and it still aggravates me beyond belief.

Firstly, that article about “Nice Guys/Nice Guy Syndrome” that’s been circulating? GARBAGE, both sexes behave in that way, not just males. The “Nice Guy” thing isn’t supposed to be someone who does stuff for a girl expecting something in return, that would by nature mean he’s not a nice guy, it’s someone who gets used and manipulated by a girl who knows they have feelings for them. And, surprise, this goes both ways - just as girls can manipulate guys who they know have feelings for them, guys can do exactly the same thing. Shit, girls can do this to girls they know have feelings for them, and guys can do it with guys they know have feelings for them. And, just as a ‘nice guy’ can actually be an asshole expecting some sort of reward for his behavior SO CAN FEMALES. Have you honestly never heard a girl complain about being friend zoned? Because I sure fucking complain about that shit, and I’ve heard lots of other girls do the same. This “Nice Guy” situation, both when someone is actually a nice person being taken advantage of, or when they’re actually expecting something applies to both genders so stop making it a gender/sex issue. 

The other article that I’ve seen going around that really pissed me off was the one about the girl who goes into a comic book store with her boyfriend, felt as though the people in there (White Cis Heterosexual Male Nerds - I’m not even going to go into how many assumptions are being made there, but whatever) were staring at her/objectifying her and got upset and left. The article was written by her boyfriend.

I’m not even going to discuss how much it bothers me that she didn’t just say something about how she was being made to feel uncomfortable, but this article completely vilifies White Males. This is some serious bullshit to me as a female living in New York City. There has not been a week I’ve lived here that at least once walking down the street someone has cat called me, things that get reactions from me ranging from “oh that was sort of nice” to “That was rude and disgusting and now I need a shower”. And you know what? Sometimes it is white guys that say things to me, but sometimes it’s Black guys, sometimes it’s Hispanic guys, sometimes it’s mixed guys, sometimes it’s Indian guys! Surprise, making females uncomfortable and objectifying them is not something only white males do. It does not matter what race or sex someone is, they have the capacity to objectify someone and make another human being feel uncomfortable and blaming this sort of thing exclusively on White Males is bullshit.

Bigotry does not have a face. I have known an Indonesian guy who outright hated Indian people, Japanese people who hate Chinese people, White people who don’t like Black people, Black people who don’t like White people. I’ve known heterosexual people who’ve been discriminated against by gay people, and gay people who have discriminated against other gay people, and trans people being discriminated against by gay and bisexual people. I have known good kind Christians who don’t discriminate against anyone, and racist, ignorant Christians who are afraid of anything different. I’ve known men who’ve been raped by women and women who’ve been raped by men.

There is no end to the human capacity to treat each other like shit, but we will never deal with it and grow if we continue to paint a single picture of what bigotry looks like in our minds. Ignorance and bigotry is not a ‘White Cis Heterosexual Male’ problem, it is a human problem.
